Daytrips from a New Home in Lamar

Home in Lamar

We’re thinking of moving to a new home in Lamar, Colorado. After we get settled, we plan to go on daytrips and see the region. There are so many interesting small towns within two hours or so. Of course, we could start in Colorado. But the Kansas border is about 20 minutes east of Lamar. And we could quickly cross the borders of Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico also.

Daytrips from Lamar Homes

What day trips could we add to our summer calendar? Let’s start with Kansas, the Sunflower State. What’s there to see in Kansas? Lots of wide-open places that pioneers and explorers trod 150 years ago, along with Native American tribes.

The Santa Fe trail went through here. How about we start with Fort Dodge? It takes about 2 1/2 hours to get there. Now called Dodge City, a dinner theater and the Old West décor in Downtown Dodge City sounds fun. Or next fall we’ll plan a couple of days to go on the Dodge City Exotic Hunt. We won’t need licenses or permits. We’d love to see the cowboy hats at Longs Inc.

According to the travelks.com website, we’d find a treasure chest of information at the Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City. But, since many small towns have established historical museums in Kansas, we might start off with Garden City. It’s closer to Lamar. Although we could plan many daytrips to Kansas, the children would enjoy visiting the alpacas, cats, and the black rhino living at the Lee Richardson Zoo. Not bad for a Sunday afternoon drive from Lamar real estate.

Oklahoma, here we come!

Oklahoma Property

Then there’s Oklahoma. About a 2.5-hour drive south/southeast of homes in Lamar, we could explore the town of Guymon, Oklahoma. It’s the largest town in the OK Panhandle. Rich with fields and pastures, the industrious farmers have conquered Mother Nature. [See our fantastic listing of irrigated farmland.]

A North Texas/New Mexico Jaunt

Heading southwest from Lamar, we could check out Dalhart, a cowboy town in the Texas Panhandle. From Lamar, Colorado, we can get there in a little over 2 hours.

In about 2 1/2 hours, we can arrive in Raton, New Mexico.

Colorado

We can take our pick for day trips both west of Lamar and north of Lamar. In approximately 2 hours we can be in Walsenburg, Trinidad, Pueblo, Limon, or Burlington. Each of these small towns comes with a story–usually found in the local museums—and attractions.

Heading farther west into the Rocky Mountains, the scenic drives, hikes, and recreation would be wonderful someday. When we have more time, we’ll get to the mountain towns and villages. To the north of Lamar properties, we look forward to visiting cattle country. We might even find a working guest ranch to join for a couple of days.
